Location for the 2010 Bayonne Reunion

Pat, our 2010 Reunion Co-chairperson, has strongly suggested the 2010 Bayonne Reunion be held in California. No one else has come up with a suggestion. Leonard, our Welcoming Subcommittee Leader, "leans a bit more towards Berkley. The Embassy Suites at Walnut Creek is less than 15 miles from Berkley and has similar amenities as the location in Baton Rouge and promises to give us a good deal for a family event. What do you think?

Oakland Zoo. Nestled in the rolling hills of 525-acre Knowland Park, the Oakland Zoo is home to more than 440 native and exotic animals living in lush, naturalistic settings. The animals are organized into geographic regions that represent the ecosystems of Africa, Asia, Australia, California and more. Founded in 1922 by Henry Snow, the Zoo has been located in its current Knowland Park location since 1936. Highlights include a children's ride area, train, and sky ride. The Zoo also offers barbecue facilities and event space for up to 250 guests and special packages for children’s birthday parties. The Zoo is open daily from 10am-4pm. www.oaklandzoo.org

I think that this would be a good place to have the picnic where everone could enjoy themselves...

I vote for the Hilton Concord Hotel! It is right across the street from dining & shopping and the mall. Six Flags Waterworld is 1 mile away and Marine World & Napa Wineries are 30 minutes away. There isn't much to do withing walking distance at the Embassy Walnut Creek.

I proposed Oakland but I am not set on it. It was a city that came to mind when I suggested that we have the reunion in CA. I would be please with any city in the SF Bay Area.

Byron suggested that we have it where there is an Embassy Suites. He found Embassy Suites in Walnut Creek, San Rafael and Sacramento, CA. Sacramento is very hot but would be ok if we don't have a picnic outdoors. It is the capitol so there is lots to do. The commuter traffic is a nightmare in San Rafael. Walnut Creek is warm, too, but all the activities would be inside except for a picnic proposed in Tilden Park in the BERKELEY HILLS which is near WC. The park does extend into Oakland, but I am not suggesting that part. The violence in Oakland is not in the park, but in the flatlands. Visitors are not usaully involved in violence. I taught in the worst part of Oakland and was never bothered.

Of the 3 places, I like Walnut Creek. All of the places that are mentioned in the anonymous email(Six Flags, Marine World and the Wine country) are short drives away. I don't go to amusement parks anymore because I have made numerous trips with my students before I retired. But I cerainly understand the appeal to families with young children. I did not walk around in Baton Rouge, but I did in New Orleans in 2003 which is among the highest cities of black-on-black crime.

Concord is near Walnut Creek and it is hot, too. No Embassy Suites for families with children.

Caira is correct! Oakland has a wonderful zoo and a nice museum. There is a new African American Museum in SF. Bay Area would be an ideal place for our reunion... lots to see and do. I lived in CA for 40 years but now lived in Spokane.
